Which American Will Top Score At The Ryder Cup?

The 42^nd Ryder Cup begins on Friday at Le Golf National, Paris as the United States aim to win their first tournament away from home soil since 1993. Seemingly almost all of Jim Furyk’s men are in prime form ahead of the competition. Three out of the four majors this season have been won by Americans, although two of the crowns were won by Brooks Koepka.

The States were able to end their drought without a victory in the tournament in 2016. Davis Love III was able to strike the right chord to bring a unity out of the 12-man team.

It will be up to Furyk to bring the same rapport as he has more than enough talent to pull off the victory. There are a number of strong players that will be vying to be the hero of the event, starting with the legendary Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods

Woods ended his long wait for a title on the PGA Tour, winning the Tour Championship last week. It was a huge moment for golf to see the 42-year-old rekindle his former brilliance on the course. Woods had endured a five-year drought without a win on the tour as a lack of form and a number of injuries limited his ability to challenge. At one point it appeared that he would never be able to rediscover the form that took him within striking distance of breaking Jack Nicklaus’ 17 major crowns. However, Woods has been solid enough on the course throughout the season.

The 42-year-old suggested that he was reaching the point at the PGA Championship in August, although he was unable to edge over the line. Woods has not always thrived in the Ryder Cup, with the American currently holding a losing record at the tournament. He has lost 17 of his 33 matches, winning 13 of his contests along with three ties. Furyk will be looking at the 42-year-old to provide the experience with Phil Mickelson in a group that does not have a great deal of depth in the competition. Woods could be used as a tone-setter using his aura to intimidate the Europeans. Brooks Koepka

Koepka is in the form of his life, winning two of the four majors this season. He has been outstanding throughout the campaign, displaying the clinical edge and composure to win the titles. The 28-year-old had an underwhelming start to the term before he successfully defended his US Open crown. Koepka had to battle Dustin Johnson for his title in tough conditions at Shinnecock Hills Golf Course. Whereas his compatriot struggled on the final day, Koekpa held his nerve to hold off Johnson and Tommy Fleetwood to win for the second year on the bounce.

He was able to build on his performance, producing another brilliant display at a major adding the PGA Championship to his collection of titles. The 28-year-old upped the ante after a slow start to his tournament, taking command on the second day and he did not relinquish the lead even as Woods emerged in the field. Koepka had a strong outing in his first Ryder Cup in 2016. He won three of his four matches, including a win over Danny Willett in the singles, rising to the occasion for his team. Given his performances at the major events Koepka should relish the platform of the competition. Justin Thomas

Thomas is one of the three rookies that are part of the United States’ side. The 24-year-old will be expected to see a lot of action over the course of the three days in his first experience of the Ryder Cup. Thomas has a good record at match play, finishing fourth in the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play earlier this season. He has won three times on the PGA Tour this term, highlighting his form, although his last triumph came at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at the beginning of August. Thomas was pegged as one of the leading contenders’ at all four majors to add to his PGA Championship crown won at the end of the 2017 campaign.

However, Thomas failed to rise to the occasion across the board, missing the cut at The Open. It does not suggest he travels well, which could be a concern for the American in Paris. Patrick Reed

Reed was one of the players that narrowly missed out as Thomas won the PGA Championship in 2017. However, he claimed glory for himself at the ultimate test in Augusta, winning the Green Jacket at the Masters with an accomplished performance. He was incredible over the four days of the tournament, coping with the pressure with relative ease. Other players have been daunted by the rigours of Augusta on the final round, but Reed held his composure to the claim the crown. Since then Reed has been relatively underwhelming on the course, although he did finish fourth at the US Open.

He has struggled for his best in recent competitions, finishing in the top-20 just once in his last seven outings. However, Reed loves the big occasion and has proven mettle in the Ryder Cup. He has an excellent record, winning six of his nine matches. Love III put Reed out in all five matches last time out, notching 3.5 points. His duel with Rory McIlroy in the singles was a thrilling spectacle that he just managed to edge for Team USA.
