LA Chargers To Continue Winning Streak

October 19, 2018

The Los Angeles Chargers will be aiming to make a statement against the Tennessee Titans at Wembley Stadium to keep pace in the battle at the top of the AFC Conference.

After a slow start to the season Anthony Lynn’s men have hit their stride, winning their last three matches on the bounce to move within striking distance of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The only matches the Chargers have lost this term have been the Chiefs and the Los Angeles Rams. On the other hand the sides they have triumphed over have not been of the upper echelon of outfits, with the Titans offering perhaps the best measuring stick of their progress.

Tennessee have been inconsistent to say the least. They’ve enjoyed impressive wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Philadelphia Eagles. However, they’ve also suffered disappointing defeats at the hands of the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens in back-to-back games.

Marcus Mariota looks a shell of the player that entered the league with promise in the 2015 campaign. The Titans need to find their form on offense to avoid taking a step back this term under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. There’s a lot of pressure on them to perform at Wembley.

Can Rivers maintain his good form?

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have enjoyed a good start to the term, bucking the trend of their campaigns over the last decade. In the past the club have been made to rue their poor form early in the season, which has cost them playoff berths. However, this time around, Lynn’s men are on course to challenge for the post-season, although the Chiefs in the AFC West will be a hard team to overcome at the top of the division. Kansas City already own the tie-breaker therefore Los Angeles will have to be flawless in their form to knock off their rivals.

Fortunately for the Chargers, Rivers is playing at an MVP-level. The 36-year-old has always been a stable of consistency at the quarterback position, putting forward only one bad campaign in his 15 years in the NFL. This term Rivers has taken his form to the next level, throwing 15 touchdowns already to just three interceptions. The quarterback is in a good place with his targets around him, having already built a solid rapport with Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams and Antonio Gates. Mike Williams has come to the fore on occasions, while Austin Ekeler has been a good foil out of the backfield.

Perhaps the biggest change for Los Angeles is the performances of running back Melvin Gordon. There were high hopes when the Chargers drafted Gordon in the first round of the 2015. He struggled to find his way in his first three seasons in the league, but has enjoyed a breakout campaign, averaging over five years per carry along with nine total touchdowns. Gordon has eased the pressure on Rivers, forcing defenses to respect the running game as well as Rivers’ threat through the air. On the other side of the ball the Chargers have been solid enough. They’ve been playing without their best player Joey Bosa due to a foot injury. However, his return will boost Los Angeles’ pass-rush, making them a formidable opponent for any team in the league.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans have been somewhat of an enigma this season, producing impressive performances on week then shockers the next. After suffering an opening-day defeat at the hands of the Miami Dolphins, Vrabel’s men reeled off three wins in a row, including a triumph over the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles. The victory should have been a catalyst for the team to take control of the AFC South. They were presented with an excellent opportunity to prove they were capable of running away with the division, only to lose on the road to the Bills.

Tennessee’s outing last week against the Ravens was a complete and utter humiliation on home soil. Mariota was sacked 11 times by Baltimore defense, who notched more quarterback takedowns than the quarterback had completed passes downfield. The Titans were shut out in the process of their 21-point defeat, leaving Mariota and offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur under the spotlight.

Former head coach Mike Mularkey was fired due to the club’s uninspiring play on offense. The new regime are not off to a good start in attempting to bring life to the unit. Blame falls on the shoulders of LaFleur along with the offensive line, although Mariota has not covered himself in glory. After a decent start to his NFL career, Mariota failed to live up to the billing of being the second-overall pick. Unless he can turn his season around there will be a difficult decision ahead of the Titans as to whether to hand their quarterback a long-term deal. A good display is required from Mariota and his offensive team-mates in London.

Malcolm Butler is another Tennessee player that has faced criticism. The Titans handed the cornerback a lucrative contract to match up with elite receivers. He has been victimised all over the field giving up touchdowns aplenty. Butler has not been alone in his struggles in coverage, although the price of his contract paints a bigger target on his chest. The 28-year-old has to start living up to his deal. Tennessee’s defense has been relatively solid elsewhere, but they’re in desperate need of support from the other side of the ball.
