New Orleans Saints To End LA Rams’ Unbeaten Run

November 2, 2018

The Los Angeles Rams came through a tough test against the Green Bay Packers last time out, but their unbeaten record this term will face another challenge on the road at the New Orleans Saints.

Ty Montgomery’s fumble at the Los Angeles Coliseum allowed the Rams to see out the victory, denying Aaron Rodgers the opportunity to engineer a game-winning drive for the Packers.

The contest was the closest Los Angeles have been pushed this term, but they managed to rise to the occasion to see off the threat, moving to 8-0 on the campaign. Sean McVay’s men have further tests ahead, but they could have one eye on a potential run at an unbeaten season.

New Orleans will push them harder than Green Bay given their record this term. Drew Brees and company have been outstanding, reeling off six wins on the bounce after losing their opener to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sean Payton’s side proved their mettle on the road last week with a brilliant win over the Minnesota Vikings. The defense produced big plays when required to force mistakes from Adam Thielen and Kirk Cousins to secure the victory. New Orleans will need a similar effort this week to end the Rams’ unbeaten start to the season.

Will the Saints end the Rams' unbeaten run?

New Orleans Saints

The Saints avenged their defeat in the Minnesota Miracle by defeating the Vikings last time out. New Orleans’ defense secured two vital turnovers to swing the contest in the favour of their side, forcing a fumble from Thielen and notching a pick-six of Cousins to deliver the victory. Payton’s men are playing complementary football with both offense and defense contributing to their six wins on the bounce. New Orleans’ season began with a shocking home defeat to the Buccaneers, but since then the club have been flawless, putting themselves in contention for a bye in the post-season.

Brees is playing arguably the best football of his career, although he did throw his first interception of the term last week. Still the 39-year-old continues to operate at the peak of his powers, throwing for 1,990 yards and 14 touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 118.2 – the best figure of any player that has played over seven matches.

The Saints have not been over reliant on Brees this season, allowing him to play within himself and not throw almost 50 passes per game as he had been accustomed to in years past. He’s in a good rhythm with Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara, who have both been superstars. One slight concern will be burden placed on the two players, with not a lot of talent outside of the duo on New Orleans’ offense.

Cameron Jordan is the anchor of the Saints’ defense and has continued to shine. However, he has been supported brilliantly by Marcus Davenport and Sheldon Rankins, the former living up to the billing after being selected in the first round of the 2018 Draft. PJ Williams notched the interception of Cousins and scored against the Vikings, highlighting the talent in the secondary. Between Marshon Lattimore, PJ Williams, Marcus Williams and Eli Apple there’s a solid group beginning to emerge, although they will have to be at their best to stop Jared Goff and company.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were tested by the Packers right to the death in their contest last week. McVay almost paid the price for a conservative call that only put his team two points in front with two minutes remaining. However, Montgomery’s fumble on a kick-off return allowed Los Angeles to see out the win, with Todd Gurley wisely dropping to the deck to run out the clock than going for the endzone.

It was not a complete performance from the Rams and at times their offense was held in check by the Packers’ defense. They proved they don’t have to be at the peak of their powers to score almost 30 points as Goff and Gurley turned on just enough quality to edge out Rodgers and his team.

Gurley’s success is more important to the Rams than Goff, with the offense flowing through the quality of the running back. He notched a 100-yard game on the ground for the fourth time this term, notching his 15th touchdown in the process. The 24-year-old is the first name opposing defenses look to limit against Los Angeles.

It’s not to say Goff has not played well – he has performed at a high level. However, there is more space to exploit in the passing game due to the presence of Gurley. Goff threw for three touchdowns against the Packers, taking his tally to 17 on the season. More importantly he has limited his mistakes, committing only five interceptions. Remaining error-free could be the difference between home-field advantage and facing a challenge on the road in the playoffs for Los Angeles.

Aaron Donald is on the way to winning NFL Defensive Player of Year award for the second year on the bounce. After a slow start to the season, the defensive tackle has now recorded 10 sacks. He’s on pace to break the 20-sack barrier for the first time in his career. The Rams have bolstered their pass-rush around the superstar, acquiring Dante Fowler Jr from the Jacksonville Jaguars, which will create further havoc for opposing offenses.

Betting Options

The Saints have only lost one game this term, which came on the opening day of the season. Los Angeles are unbeaten therefore we should be a set for a thrilling contest. Both teams are well balanced and have potent offenses that can score at will, but also the players on defense to make crucial stops. The key to the game will be the performance of Gurley. If he can control the tempo of the contest then the Rams will be able to settle into a rhythm.

Should the Saints limit him out of the backfield and force the game into the hands of Goff, New Orleans will have a huge advantage.
