Eagles To Inflict Further Woe On Cowboys

November 10, 2018

The Dallas Cowboy are staring down the barrel of yet another underwhelming campaign as they head into a must-win contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dallas suffered a hammering on home soil at the hands of the Tennessee Titans, dropping their fifth game of the season. The club fell to 3-5 as a result of their defeat, two games behind NFC East leaders the Washington Redskins.

The Cowboys have endured struggles on offense throughout the campaign. Even the addition of Amari Cooper, acquired for the 2019 first-round pick, did not provide a boost, despite the wideout notching a debut touchdown.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is a man under pressure, having failed to kick on from his impressive rookie season. His performances between now and the end of the campaign could dictate whether Dallas are searching for a successor in the off-season.

The Eagles are also under pressure to perform currently sitting at .500 in their campaign. It has not been an easy term for the reigning Super Bowl champions, but they come into the contest fresh off their bye week after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

Doug Pederson’s men made strides in their win over the Jaguars and add Golden Tate into their receiving corps. A victory over Dallas would put them in contention for the NFC East crown with their rivals the Redskins at the top of the division.

Will Wentz inspire another Eagles win?

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles been inconsistent this season, highlighted by their 4-4 record. Pederson’s men seemed to find their form against the Jaguars last time out. Wentz and his offense put enough points on the board before the defense was able to see out the contest, fending off a Jacksonville comeback. Philadelphia are still in position to make a charge for the post-season. Encouragingly for the club they’ve played nowhere near the best and are still just one game outside of the playoff places. Given the injuries suffered by the Washington Redskins over the past week, the Eagles will fancy their chances of winning the division for the second year on the bounce.

Wentz’s statistics have been excellent this season, although there are still concerns about his form in the redzone. He threw three touchdowns to one interception against the Jaguars, putting 24 points on the board in the process. The 25-year-old is still rounding into form and fitness as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL that ruled him out of the playoffs and the Super Bowl. There’s still plenty of room for improvement for the quarterback. The addition of Tate will add an extra dimension to the receiving corps. Philadelphia sent a third-round pick to acquire the wideout from the Detroit Lions. Tate has been one of the best slot receivers in the NFL during his career. He will give Wentz a reliable target over the middle of the field, easing the strain of Zach Ertz and Alshon Jeffery to make plays on a regular basis.

The Eagles took a hit with the loss of pass-rusher Derek Barnett for the rest of the season. It’s the one area where Philadelphia have the depth to cover for his absence, although the second-year player was just starting to hit form before suffering his injury. The defense is one of the leading units in points allowed this season, conceding only 19.6 per game. Maintaining that level of form in a league where offense has dominated this term could be vital for their hopes of returning to the Super Bowl.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are on the path to nowhere for the second season on the bounce. In the last campaign the absence of Ezekiel Elliott due to suspension loomed large. Prescott was unable to carry the offense alone during the middle stretch of the term, resulting in the Cowboys’ fall from grace. Even with Elliott back in the offense this season, the offense has struggled to fire. The attention has now fallen solely on Prescott’s performances for Dallas’ struggles. Head Jason Garrett and the offensive coaching staff at the club also have to take responsibility for the failures.

In a league where creativity and outside of the box thinking is yielding huge success for teams such as the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cowboys appear to be stuck firmly in the 1990s. They got off to a fast start against the Tennessee Titans – aided by their opponent’s mistakes. Dallas were able to put up 14 points as Cooper and Allen Hurns found the endzone, but the home side were then shut out. Philadelphia have one of the best defenses in the NFL, which presents a bad match-up for the Cowboys’ misfiring offense.

Dallas had their moments on defense against the Titans, although the performance of their offense appeared to deflate the unit. Demarcus Lawrence continued his excellent campaign with a strip-sack of Marcus Mariota. He has 6.5 sacks on the season, leading Dallas’ defense. Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch are forming an exciting tandem at the linebacker position, while Byron Jones has been one of the leading cornerbacks in the NFL this term. There’s enough talent on the unit to limit the Eagles, but whether it will be enough to overhaul their rivals is another matter.

Betting Options

The Cowboys are trending downwards as a team, losing back-to-back matches. Garrett is under huge pressure in his position to muster a response from his side. Philadelphia are well placed to capitalise on Dallas’ struggles. Wentz is starting to find his rhythm again in the pocket, while the addition of Tate will open up the passing game even further for the Eagles.
