Los Angeles Rams To Stymie Kansas City Chiefs’ Momentum

November 17, 2018

Two of the leading teams in the NFL in the 2018 season face off on Monday night when the Los Angeles Rams host the Kansas City Chiefs.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Mexico City, but fears about the quality of the pitch forced the league to move the contest back to Los Angeles.

Both of the clubs have been sensational on offense this term. Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff are emerging as two of the new stars in the NFL at the quarterback position.

The two players are among the leading contenders for the MVP award alongside Drew Brees. Their ability to throw downfield to make plays has almost guaranteed their respective teams an average of 30 points per game. Kansas City hold the edge with 35.3 over Los Angeles’ 33.5 after 10 matches.

There are playmakers at every position in the offense, although the Rams have suffered a significant loss with the absence of Cooper Kupp. Without him San McVay’s men are down a key player, but they do have the talent to continue their dominance without him.

Both offenses have needed to be on form as the defenses have struggled to keep points off the board. The contest will be likely be decided by which team makes the most plays on defense – it may only be one, but it could be the decisive factor.

Goff and Gurley hold the key for LA

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams bounced back from their defeat at the hands of the New Orleans Saints by overcoming the Seattle Seahawks. McVay’s men were unbeaten heading into their clash against the Saints, but suffered a 45-35 loss on the road. That defeat has put the Rams in a difficult position, having been knocked out of the number one seed in the NFC Conference. They now need to better New Orleans’ record to wrestle back home-field advantage for the post-season.

The Rams were able to all but wrap the NFC West last week with a narrow win over Seahawks on home soil. It was a close contest, but Los Angeles’ defense held Russell Wilson in check in the closing stages of the game. Wilson had put 31 points on the board, but for the second time of the campaign against Seattle, the defense were able to come up with an important stop.

Goff and Gurley have been the heartbeat of the team. Goff has now thrown for 3,184 yards along with 22 touchdowns to six interceptions. His consistency throughout the term has been extremely impressive, avoiding costly turnovers. Gurley continues to impress out of the backfield, boasting almost 1,400 yards from the line of scrimmage along with 17 total touchdowns.

Limiting the duo will the Chiefs’ priority, although no team has managed to hold them down for an entire game yet. On the other side of the ball Marcus Peters has been underwhelming since his move from Kansas City. He will be keen to prove a point against his old team-mates. Aaron Donald could be the key player in the game. His force in the middle of the line could provide the one sack, turnover or disruption to make the difference in a close contest.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have been relentless due to the potency of their offense this term. Their only defeat came at the hands of the New England Patriots in a closely-fought contest. Since then they’ve reeled off four wins on the bounce, maintaining their lead at the top of the AFC Conference.

There is pressure behind them in their division due to the presence of the Los Angeles Chargers at 7-2. Kansas City hold the tie-breaker over their rivals, but will not want to tempt fate in the AFC West and lose out on the number one seed. Andy Reid’s men have utilised the arm of Mahomes to great effect. The 23-year-old has been outstanding in his first full season, throwing 31 touchdowns to seven interceptions.

Mistakes have started to creep into his play after a relatively flawless start to the term, but Mahomes remains one of the most potent passers in the NFL and a definite candidate for the MVP award. Kareem Hunt has been equally important to the success of the Chiefs this season. Although he does not have the gaudy numbers of Gurley, he has been just as effective.

Hunt has 13 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards from the line of scrimmage. The running back has eased the pressure on Mahomes at times over the campaign. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce have been impressive in the receiving game, with the former notching two touchdowns in the club’s win over the Arizona Cardinals last week. The diverse set of targets could be the difference between the teams on Monday.

Dee Ford and Chris Jones have to have big games for the Chiefs in Los Angeles. They cannot let the Rams’ dictate the line of scrimmage. Kansas City’s defense has been porous this term, they will need a least one stop to emerge with a victory.

Head To Head

Games Played: 11 Los Angeles Rams: 4 Kansas City Chiefs 7

The teams last faced off in the 2014 campaign at Arrowhead Stadium when the Chiefs recorded a comfortable victory over the Rams, who were then based in St Louis. Austin Davis and Tre Mason were at quarterback and running back respectively for the Rams, while Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles were behind center for Kansas City.

It proves how much can change in the NFL over four years.  The Chiefs have won the last six meetings between the sides, while the last clash in Los Angeles came in 1991 when Kansas City – coached by Marty Schottenheimer – secured a 27-20 win at the Coliseum.
