UFC Fight Night 142 Main Card Preview and Best Bets

November 29, 2018

Tyson Pedro and Tai Tuivasa are ready to battle in Adelaide

UFC Fight Night 142 takes place just one day after The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale airs live around the world from Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Fight Night event marks the organization’s return to Australia and will be the second time the UFC has entered the city of Adelaide.

This time, a heavyweight clash between local hero Tai Tuivasa and Junior Dos Santos is set to headline the relatively packed fight card.

Also on the card are several other local stars such as Mark Hunt, yson Pedro, Jake Matthews, Jim Crute, and many more. These Australian fighters will be testing their abilities against the best from overseas.

If you haven’t done so already, make sure to review our preview and betting guide for Junior Dos Santos vs. Tai Tuivasa, as well as our betting guide for Rafael Dos Anjos vs. Kamaru Usman that also takes place this weekend.

In the meantime, let’s take a detailed look at the other fights on the UFC Fight Night 142 card in Australia and identify the best betting opportunities.

Mauricio Rua vs. Tyson Pedro

Saturday, December 1 – 11:30 pm (ET) /  3:30am (GMT)

Here we have another example of the UFC testing their young up-and-coming fighters against the aging veterans who have already clocked up many miles inside the cage.

This time, it’s Tyson Pedro who is looking to bounce back and score a win over the experienced Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Mauricio Rua vs. Tyson Pedro – Best Odds
Fighter Best Odds Site
Mauricio Rua 4.85Bet €100 to win €48577/20Bet £100 to win £485+385Bet $100 to win $4853.85Bet HK$100 to win HK$4853.85Bet Rp100 to win Rp485-0.2597Bet RM100 to win RM485 BetOnline
Tyson Pedro 1.20Bet €100 to win €1201/5Bet £100 to win £120-500Bet $100 to win $1200.20Bet HK$100 to win HK$120-5.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1200.2000Bet RM100 to win RM120 Bovada

It wasn’t all that long ago when Tyson Pedro was considered to be a highly-talented rising star in the light heavyweight division. With decent athleticism, powerful striking, and what seemed to be a relatively well-rounded game, Pedro started his time in the UFC with two big wins over Khalil Rountree and Paul Craig.

Those wins, and a later one against Saparbeg Safarov would eventually move Tyson Pedro up to a total of seven professional victories, all of which have come via first-round stoppage. In many ways, this highlights Pedro’s inexperience. Against Ilir Latifi, the first fighter to make it to the second round with Pedro, the Australian looked lost and eventually gave up a unanimous decision.

And in his most recent fight with Ovince Saint Preux, Pedro looked to have it in the bag after crashing a heavy combo into his opponent. But, again showing his weaknesses, Pedro confusingly shot in for a takedown and let go of a brilliant opportunity to seize victory.

He’ll have a small window for error against Mauricio Rua, who still has knockout power in his hands at the age of 37.

Before meeting Anthony Smith at UFC Fight Night 134, it appeared as if Rua was finding himself again. With three consecutive wins to his name, including a split decision victory over Corey Anderson, Rua was back in form. However, he was eventually steamrolled by the red-hot Anthony Smith in less than 90 seconds in July this year.

This one is Pedro’s to lose. The Australian seems to have an edge across most areas, and it’s tough to see a path to victory for his veteran opponent.

We’re taking Pedro with confidence.

Bet on Tyson Pedro to win 1.20Bet €100 to win €1201/5Bet £100 to win £120-500Bet $100 to win $1200.20Bet HK$100 to win HK$120-5.00Bet Rp100 to win Rp1200.2000Bet RM100 to win RM120 at Bovada

Mark Hunt poses for a photo before a UFC fight in Australia

Mark Hunt vs. Justin Willis

Saturday, December 1 – 11:00 pm (ET) /  3:00am (GMT)

After an exciting stint in the UFC, this looks to be Mark Hunt’s final Octagon appearance. He’ll battle with Justin Willis on the main card of UFC Fight Night 142.

Mark Hunt vs. Justin Willis – Best Odds

Mark Hunt 2.05Bet €100 to win €20521/20Bet £100 to win £205+105Bet $100 to win $2051.05Bet HK$100 to win HK$2051.05Bet Rp100 to win Rp205-0.9524Bet RM100 to win RM205 ComeOn
Justin Willis 1.80Bet €100 to win €1804/5Bet £100 to win £180-125Bet $100 to win $1800.80Bet HK$100 to win HK$180-1.25Bet Rp100 to win Rp1800.8000Bet RM100 to win RM180 Mybookie

The bookmakers have the veteran, Mark Hunt, as the betting underdog in this contest currently after he initially opened up as a slight favorite.

It’s clear that the public is leaning toward the younger, more explosive heavyweight athlete in this contest. Willis brings an uncommonly high level of athleticism with him to the cage and stands out from the pack of aging heavyweight fighters who look sluggish with their movement.

But don’t be fooled into thinking just because Hunt is older that he doesn’t pack incredible power in his punches. Hunt still has walkoff knockout potential in his hands, despite not being able to floor Aleksey Oleinik with his best shots, and he also has the superb technique to go with it.

If this fight remains at a distance and Hunt is able to methodically pick apart Willis with long range strikes, this fight has all the makings for a classic victory for the local. However, if Willis bursts forward and overwhelms Hunt, the more realistic outcome is that Hunt won’t be able to hang with the younger fighter in this one.

We would have been all-in on Justin Willis at underdog odds, and we still favor him enough in this contest to confidently back him as an underdog.

Bet on Justin Willis to win 1.80Bet €100 to win €1804/5Bet £100 to win £180-125Bet $100 to win $1800.80Bet HK$100 to win HK$180-1.25Bet Rp100 to win Rp1800.8000Bet RM100 to win RM180 at Mybookie

Jake Matthews lunges forward with a right punch in the UFC

Jake Matthews vs. Tony Martin

Saturday, December 1 – 10:30 pm (ET) /  2:30am (GMT)

Jake Matthews looks to keep his winning streak alive this weekend in Adelaide as he faces another welterweight who has only recently joined the division.

Jake Matthews 1.87Bet €100 to win €18787/100Bet £100 to win £187-115Bet $100 to win $1870.87Bet HK$100 to win HK$187-1.15Bet Rp100 to win Rp1870.8700Bet RM100 to win RM187 BetOnline

Having competed as a lightweight for many years, a string of defeats encouraged both Jake Matthews and Tony Martin to move up and compete in the 170-pound division, where they are both undefeated after three and two fights respectively.

Matthews has always been considered as a great young talent on the UFC’s roster but it was only until his move up to welterweight that he has taken it up another level and backed his potential with actual results. A split decision win against Bojan Velickovic was enough to move him forward to an excellent Fight of the Night winning effort against Jingliang Li. Most recently, Matthews submitted Shinsho Anzai.

Martin has been equally as terrifying in his new home as a welterweight. A unanimous decision victory over Keita Nakamura was then followed up by a brilliant KO/TKO win against Ryan LaFlare only last month.

Both fighters are relatively well rounded but we see Tony Martin as the ultimate victor in this contest considering his slick counter striking ability. Martin should get the best off Matthews as he storms in with forward rushes

Bet on Tony Martin to win 1.95Bet €100 to win €19519/20Bet £100 to win £195-105Bet $100 to win $1950.95Bet HK$100 to win HK$195-1.05Bet Rp100 to win Rp1950.9500Bet RM100 to win RM195 at ComeOn

Jim Crute hammers a right fist into his opponent

Jim Crute vs. Paul Craig

Saturday, December 1 – 10:00 pm (ET) /  2:00am (GMT)

Jim Crute enters the UFC after a standout performance on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series earlier this year and will face dangerous submission grappler Paul Craig.

Jim Crute vs. Paul Craig – Best Odds
Fighter Best Odds Site
Jim Crute 1.40Bet €100 to win €1402/5Bet £100 to win £140-250Bet $100 to win $1400.40Bet HK$100 to win HK$140-2.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp1400.4000Bet RM100 to win RM140 ComeOn
Paul Craig 3.05Bet €100 to win €30541/20Bet £100 to win £305+205Bet $100 to win $3052.05Bet HK$100 to win HK$3052.05Bet Rp100 to win Rp305-0.4878Bet RM100 to win RM305  BetOnline

Jim Crute is another of the many talented Australian and New Zealand based fighters coming from that way of the world. Crute is a very versatile light heavyweight fighter who can mix it up standing and won the mat. While on the feet, Crute uses his slick kickboxing techniques to pepper his opponent with long range shots before eventualy working them over on the inside. Crute’s primary objective is to get his opponent to the mat and secure top position. Once there, he uses his excellent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ability to maintain the position and hammer down heavy shots.

Craig will likely be at a disadvantage on the feet in this contest. The longer and taller fighter, Craig is used to fighting at his own range. While Crute might have difficulty adapting to this range early, we can are predicting that his power will eventually be too much for Craig.

Of course, Crute will need to consider Craig’s tricky submission techniques on the mat, where he has scored two submission victories to date, but elsewhere he should be relatively safe in this contest.

We’re thinking that Crute comes up big in his UFC debut.

Bet on Jim Crute to win 1.40Bet €100 to win €1402/5Bet £100 to win £140-250Bet $100 to win $1400.40Bet HK$100 to win HK$140-2.50Bet Rp100 to win Rp1400.4000Bet RM100 to win RM140 at ComeOn
