McCarthy To Mould Darnold At Jets?

January 8, 2019

The New York Jets have known nothing other than disappointment since the days of Joe Namath when the club last lifted the Super Bowl in 1969.

New York are now looking for their next head coach after Woody Johnson and Christopher Johnson made the decision to fire Todd Bowles after a 4-12 campaign in 2018.

Bowles made a bright start to his tenure in New York when he was hired in the 2015 season. With Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker on offense, the Jets moved to within striking distance of a place in the post-season.

However, the Jets lost to the Buffalo Bills in the final week of the season and missed out. It was all downhill from there for Bowles as his side won only 14 of their next 48 matches, resulting in his dismissal.

The presence of promising rookie Sam Darnold on the roster makes the job an intriguing one, although there is not a great deal of talent elsewhere.

Jamal Adams has blossomed into a brilliant safety giving the new man a starting point on defense, but immediate success is unlikely, especially in the AFC East with the New England Patriots for company.

Is McCarthy the right man for the Jets?

Mike McCarthy

The obvious choice for the Jets would be to move for McCarthy. He has experience grooming a young quarterback to success having guided Aaron Rodgers on the path to becoming one of the greatest players at his position in NFL history. McCarthy won the Super Bowl in the 2010 season with the Packer by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers. His side then went 15-1 in the following campaign, but endured playoff disappointment. That would be the story for the rest of his reign at Lambeau Field, failing to reach the Super Bowl, which included two defeats in the NFC Championship Game. The Packers’ defense was suspect in big moments, while the club become over reliant on the arm of Rodgers to win games.

McCarthy will have learned from the experience, and although Green Bay were probably correct to move on – it’s not to say his coaching skills are declining. New York should relish the prospect of attracting a coach of McCarthy’s quality. He has the qualities needed to unlock the potential of Darnold. To beat the Patriots and take control of the AFC East, the Jets need Darnold to become an elite quarterback. New York has hired defensive coaches for too long and time is right for them to move in the offensive direction. McCarthy has the experience over his rivals and at 1.68Bet €100 to win €16817/25Bet £100 to win £168-147Bet $100 to win $1680.68Bet HK$100 to win HK$168-1.47Bet Rp100 to win Rp1680.6800Bet RM100 to win RM168  with Bookmaker is the overwhelming favourite.

Kliff Kingsbury

Kingsbury is an intriguing candidate and would fit the mould of a young offensive minds that appears to be the growing trend in the NFL. He served as the head coach of Texas Tech in the college game for five years before his contract was not renewed for the 2019 season. During his time at Texas Tech, he developed Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes into quality quarterbacks, although the former transferred to Oklahoma after being ousted by Mahomes. There is undoubted pedigree to get the best out of his quarterbacks, which has been successful elsewhere in the NFL. Sean McVay and Matt Nagy have proven that the concept of an offensive-minded coach can work.

Kingsbury was not renowned for his defensive work, although the Jets would likely add a veteran defensive coordinator to ease the strain. It has been the case in Los Angeles for McVay and Chicago for Nagy, with the veteran defensive mind taking sole control of their side of the ball. Kingsbury would be left alone on the offense and could provide the spark that the Jets need to compete with the Patriots in the AFC East. Their offense has been lacklustre for too long and the ingenuity of a young coach could see them challenge sooner rather than later. At odds of 7.63Bet €100 to win €763663/100Bet £100 to win £763+663Bet $100 to win $7636.63Bet HK$100 to win HK$7636.63Bet Rp100 to win Rp763-0.1508Bet RM100 to win RM763  with Bookmaker he has an outside chance.

Eric Bieniemy

Bieniemy is the second Chiefs’ offensive coordinator in the space of two seasons to interview for head coaching positions. Andy Reid’s coaching tree has been the most fruitful in the modern day NFL and almost every team in search of a head coach always seem to be interested in his assistants. Bieniemy replaced Nagy as offensive coordinator this term following his departure to the Bears. The Chiefs’ offense was taken to new heights with Mahomes at quarterback. Unfortunately for Bieniemy he will not be able to take a huge amount of credit for the success.

A lot of the outstanding work has been due to the immense talent of Mahomes’ arm along with the athletic ability of his receivers. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce were both named to the Pro Bowl, and before his release for off-the-field reasons Kareem Hunt was on the same path. Bieniemy could mirror the success of Nagy at the Jets with a new quarterback, but it may behove teams to see whether he can repeat the level of production in a second season before gambling on hiring him as a head coach. As an outside bet of 13.53Bet €100 to win €13531253/100Bet £100 to win £1353+1253Bet $100 to win $135312.53Bet HK$100 to win HK$135312.53Bet Rp100 to win Rp1353-0.0798Bet RM100 to win RM1353  at Bookmaker he could be worth a punt.

Adam Gase

Gase was one of the surprise firings at the end of the 2018 regular season. The Dolphins finished with a 7-9 record, but were hardly blessed with outstanding talent on their roster. Gase had led the club to the playoffs in the 2016 campaign where they were beaten by the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Ryan Tannehill’s injury had left them exposed in the contest. Tannehill’s fitness issues were the contributing factor in the Dolphins’ struggles along with his inconsistent form. Gase could not get the best out of the 30-year-old, while his control of the locker room was suspect at times. He would often turn to trading or releasing players that did not toe the line.

Although Gase did produce good results at home against New England along with the Jets, the final straw was the Dolphins’ defeat to the Buffalo Bills on the road. His 5-1 record against New York may have compelled the Johnsons to interview the 41-year-old. Gase does have a decent record coaching quarterbacks, although his best work with Peyton Manning is now six seasons ago. The NFL has moved on since then with new systems in play. The Jets cannot afford to be looking in the past, although his odds of 15.04Bet €100 to win €1504351/25Bet £100 to win £1504+1404Bet $100 to win $150414.04Bet HK$100 to win HK$150414.04Bet Rp100 to win Rp1504-0.0712Bet RM100 to win RM1504  with Bookmaker are intriguing.
