Cowboys To Pull Off Road Upset Over Rams

January 10, 2019

The Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys meet in the NFC Divisional Round at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in battle between two of the NFL’s best running backs.

Todd Gurley and Ezekiel Elliott have established themselves as the cream of the crop at their position. Both players have put forward outstanding seasons to drive their side into the playoffs, but now need to raise the level of their game to reach the NFC Championship Game.

The Rams were seemingly on course to earn the number one seed in the NFL. Sean McVay’s men won their opening eight matches of the season, but then lost to the New Orleans Saints, paving the way for the NFC South outfit to snatch the top spot away from them. Los Angeles have only lost once at home this term, but will be wary of the danger of the Cowboys.

Dallas were impressive last week to see off the dangerous Seattle Seahawks. Dak Prescott and Elliott along with Amari Cooper operated at the peak of their powers. Their defense was not quite as point as they have been in big matches. The unit will have to be flawless to stop the Rams’ potent array of weapons on Saturday.

Will Zeke end the Rams' season?

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were extremely impressive during the regular season, riding their high-scoring offense to a 13-3 record and their second NFC West crown on the bounce. Jared Goff and Gurley were outstanding over the course of the campaign, guiding their side to an average of 32.2 points per game and an average of 420 yards of offense every week.

Gurley maintained his levels of excellence built over the last few seasons, while Goff took the next stage of his development. Gurley is the focal point of the offense with over 1,800 yards from scrimmage along with 21 total touchdowns, 17 of which were on the ground. The 24-year-old has been unstoppable when on the field, although there will be concerns about his knee injury heading into the post-season.

If he is not at 100%, the Rams will need Goff to carry the team. That is where there have been issues at times this term. Goff was able to outduel Patrick Mahomes in a thriller against Kansas City, but he lost another shootout against a stronger defense in the form of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys have a stout defensive unit and will provide a tough challenge for Goff and company.

The Rams lost their last playoff match to the Atlanta Falcons in the 2017 campaign where the players seemed to struggle with the post-season environment. McVay is under a little bit of pressure to get off the mark in the playoffs, while the clock is ticking on keeping the majority of the roster under the salary cap. Los Angeles are operating under a win now mentality.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys proved their mettle last week with a fine performance to see off the Seahawks on home soil. Elliott surged through Seattle’s defensive line, rushing for 137 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Prescott was also on point, throwing for 226 yards and a touchdown. He saved his best play in the fourth quarter when he rushed for 17 yards on third down to set up the game-winning score. That element of clutch play will be vital on the road in Los Angeles.

Dallas’ offense has not always been firing on all cylinders this term. However, since the arrival of Cooper, they have found a balance to make them dangerous. Elliott will be the key player for the Cowboys as the Rams have been weak against the run. Aaron Donald has the ability to destroy passing and running games singlehanded therefore Dallas have to be flawless in their execution on the road.

Jason Garrett’s men have been an up and down unit on defense, but their performance against the Saints in week 14 proved their quality. A similar display will be required to keep the Rams in check. They have the personnel to achieve the feat, especially with their excellent young linebackers Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch. Demarcus Lawrence has been outstanding on the edge and has the ability to make very difficult for Goff and company. The team that controls the line of scrimmage will win the day so the onus will be on Dallas’ defensive line to get the job done.

Head to Head

Games Played: 33 Los Angeles Rams: 17 Dallas Cowboys: 16

The Rams defeated the Cowboys in their meeting last season, producing a brilliant comeback to defeat Garrett’s men. Goff and Gurley were able to outduel their rivals on the other side, while the leg of Greg Zuerlein was the difference in the fourth quarter to secure the win. The teams have met eight times in the playoffs, with nothing separating the teams with a 4-4 record. However, the last post-season match did come in 1986 when the Rams secured a 20-0 victory at Anaheim Stadium.

Match Betting Odds

The Rams’ offense slowed down towards the end of the season. It is a worrying sign entering the playoffs, while their defense has not played up to its level of talent. Donald is a superstar in the middle of the line, but outside of him Los Angeles have struggled to limit running teams. Elliott has the ability to run through the line and limit the amount of possessions in the contest. If Dallas are allowed to play the game on their terms they have more than a shot of victory. Their defense is capable of getting the one stop needed to secure the win.
