Will Brady Produce Another Super Bowl Special?

January 31, 2019

The legacy of quarterbacks is defined by their performances in the playoffs and most importantly of all the Super Bowl. Tom Brady has established his reputation on by the greatest quarterback of all time courtesy of his five Super Bowl wins, giving him the most by any signal-caller in NFL history.

Jared Goff is beginning his journey to carving out his legacy in the game. The 24-year-old was seven when Brady won his first Super Bowl crown, defeating the St Louis Rams Super Bowl XXXVI. Goff now leads the Rams against the legendary quarterback in a bid to win the club’s third crown and first since the 1999 campaign.

Goff enjoyed a better regular season than his counterpart. The 24-year-old threw for over 4,600 yards and 32 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He has improved every season since the Rams selected him first overall in the 2016 Draft. Goff has not disappointed with his performances, although the ultimate test awaits on Sunday against Brady and Bill Belichick’s defense.

Brady put forward one of the finest quarterback performances in NFL history in Super Bowl LII, throwing for 505 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He seemed poised to lead his team downfield for the winning score, only to see the ball ripped from his grasp by Brandon Graham, which secured the game for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Patriots quarterback will be determined to atone for the loss this term, although he faces another tough task against one of the rising quarterbacks in the NFL.

Can Brady win his sixth Super Bowl?

Brady had an indifferent time in the 2018 season, although he still managed to throw 29 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. However, his statistics were not as impressive as seasons past, especially in the last campaign when he was named league MVP. The 41-year-old struggled with a knee injury in the second half of the term, which affected his play, especially against the Pittsburgh Steelers when he appeared to be ducking out on throws.

He managed to find his form over the last month and has been rolling in the playoffs. Brady cut open the Los Angeles’ Chargers defense with ease in the Divisional Round as New England romped to a comfortable win. He made an uncharacteristic mistake in the AFC Championship Game, throwing an interception on the goalline. On another day that could have cost the Patriots, but when it mattered the most he was on point to lead the Patriots to their third-straight Super Bowl.

The 41-year-old will not be overawed by the occasion. His performances on the big stage have improved over time, breaking the Super Bowl yardage record in his last two trips. Brady led his team to a 25-point comeback two years ago to defeat the Atlanta Falcons and threw for 505 yards in the Patriots’ defeat last season. Against a physical Rams’ defense, he will need to be on point, but he has the experience and quality to carve them up with ease. Don’t be surprised if he wins his fifth Super Bowl MVP award on Sunday by producing another clinic.

Jared Goff

Will Goff rise to the occasion?

Goff enters his first Super Bowl in his third year in the NFL. The 24-year-old was drafted first overall in the 2016 Draft as the club gave up several picks to acquire the top spot. They chose Goff over Carson Wentz and have not been disappointed, with both quarterbacks shining in the NFL. Goff endured a baptism of fire in his first year in the league.

Under Jeff Fisher, the Rams were putrid on offense, ranking dead last in points scored. Since the arrival of McVay, Los Angeles have been one of best offensive teams in the NFL, ranking second in points scored this term behind only the Kansas City Chiefs. Goff’s improvement has been a large part of their rise and there is still plenty of room to grow for the quarterback.

The 24-year-old threw for over 4,600 yards for the first time in his career and over 30 touchdowns, increasing his levels of production from last term. McVay seemed content to place more responsibility of the shoulders of his signal-caller and he responded in turn. Goff outduelled Patrick Mahomes in his side’s triumph over the Chiefs in week 10 of the campaign.

He has not put forward many poor performances, struggling in games against the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. One concern heading into the Super Bowl will be how Goff will handle the occasion. He seemed to cope with the NFC Championship Game after a nervy start, but the Super Bowl is a completely different beast and Belichick will put his superstar credentials to the test.
