Will Rams Win Their Second Super Bowl?

January 31, 2019

The Los Angeles Rams return to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2001 season when they were beaten by the New England Patriots.

Seventeen years has passed since the ‘greatest show on turf’ from St Louis were beaten by a second-year quarterback by the name of Tom Brady.

Los Angeles’ have endured time in the NFL wilderness, enduring painful one and two-win seasons. Owner Stan Kroenke opted to end the club’s time in St Louis three years ago, returning the franchise to where it had been based for 48 years from 1946 to 1994.

Head coach Jeff Fisher had overseen five mediocre seasons before he was axed in the 2016 season, paving the way for the arrival of Sean McVay.

Little was known about McVay having served only one season as offensive coordinator at the Washington Redskins. He became the youngest head coach in NFL history at the age of 30, but has been a revelation in his three years.

McVay transformed a lifeless offense under Jeff Fisher into one of the most explosive units in the NFL. The 33-year-old has been the main reason for his side’s success, reviving Todd Gurley’s career that had stagnated under Fisher and bringing out the best in quarterback Jared Goff.

He could become the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl, although it will be a huge challenge facing off against the Patriots and arguably the greatest quarterback-coaching combinations in the history of the NFL.

Can McVay become the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl?

Why The Rams Can Win Super Bowl LII?

The Rams boast one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. McVay’s play-calling seemingly gives Goff a simple throw every time he drops back to pass downfield. Gurley has been able to find yards in the running game, blazing through holes opened up by the offensive line. Even when Gurley has not been healthy, CJ Anderson has enjoyed the same level of success in the ground game. The offense has the ability to do what the Philadelphia Eagles did to the Patriots in Super Bowl LII, put up 41 points and force Tom Brady to go score-for-score with them. Goff has the ability to spread the ball around the field – not just focusing on one target. Gurley has a favourable matchup against the slow Patriots linebackers that will make him a distinct threat out of the backfield.

Brandin Cooks has the ability to get over the top of the Patriots’ defense to open up space other wideouts on the field. Los Angeles will be desperate to build a lead to control the game. It will also allow them to put the clamps on the Patriots’ running game, forcing Brady to throw. Putting Brady in a position where he has to throw constantly will enable Aaron Donald and company to get after the 41-year-old. The Eagles proved that they only need to get to him once to make a decisive turnover. Donald has the ability to win inside with ease and bring down the Patriots quarterback. Should he get there with regularity – the game will be won for the Rams.

Why The Rams Could Lose Super Bowl LII?

There are question marks regarding the Rams heading into the Super Bowl. Goff’s form has plateaued since the beginning of the post-season and he has displayed a propensity to miss throws downfield. The 24-year-old will have nerves playing in his first Super Bowl and it could affect his throwing motion, especially in the first quarter. A spell of inaccurate throws or an interception could allow the Patriots to take charge of the game.

Los Angeles have to play the game at their tempo to ease the pressure on their quarterback. He’s not at the stage of his career where he can go score-for-score with Brady from behind. McVay’s men need to be balanced to use the play-action game to beat the Patriots’ linebackers in coverage. Gurley’s injury could also hamper their efforts as he has not been anywhere near his best form over the last month. Without him at the peak of the powers, New England may be able put the clamps on Anderson and force Goff to beat them with his arm.

Los Angeles have a lot of talented players on their defense, but they’re also mercurial. Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters play the game with a lot of emotion, which at times has gotten the better of them on the field. They cannot afford to lose their discipline against Brady and the Patriots’ receivers. The same goes for Donald and Ndamukong Suh on the defensive line. The Rams need to respect not only New England’s talent, but ensure that the occasion does not get the better of them.
